Cuyahoga County OH Common Pleas Court: Case Search & Records
Looking up a lawsuit, felony case, divorce, foreclosure or court judgment in Cuyahoga County? The official Clerk of Courts docket is the place to begin for many Common Pleas cases. But the first choice on the search screen matters: civil, criminal and appellate records use different search options, while probate and juvenile matters follow separate court systems.
This guide explains how to find the right case, search by name or number, read the docket, request court documents, calculate applicable copy costs and contact the correct Cleveland office when something is missing.

Which Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Division Has Your Case?
The Court of Common Pleas has four divisions: General, Domestic Relations, Probate and Juvenile. Although they are part of the county’s Common Pleas court structure, they do not all provide records through the same public search.
Civil and Felony Criminal
Includes felony prosecutions, major civil lawsuits, many foreclosure cases, judgments and other General Division matters.
Start at the Clerk’s main case search and select Civil or Criminal.
Divorce and Family Cases
Includes divorce, dissolution, spousal support, parenting matters and other domestic relations proceedings.
Use the Civil/Domestic docket route; the Domestic Relations Court also offers a separate case-name search.
Estates and Guardianships
Includes decedents’ estates, wills, guardianships, marriage licenses and other matters assigned to Probate Court.
Juvenile Court Matters
Includes juvenile delinquency, dependency and other matters under juvenile jurisdiction. Many case records have special access restrictions.
How to Search Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Cases Online
The Clerk’s online Case Records Search System has separate options for Civil/Domestic, Criminal and the Eighth District Court of Appeals. It also offers a foreclosure search and a submitted e-filing complaints search.
Official direct link: Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts — Search Selection and Entry.
- Open the official docket. The first page displays a welcome notice and search categories. Read the notice because some protected case information cannot be viewed online.
- Select a search category. Choose Civil/Domestic, Criminal or Court of Appeals according to your case. The correct search fields appear after selecting the search type.
- Choose how to search. Use a case-number search when you have the exact number. Otherwise choose the applicable name-search option.
- Enter the search details. Follow the format shown on the official screen. Avoid guessing a case number or adding unnecessary name filters.
- Review potential matches. Compare the case number, caption, party names, filing date and case type before selecting a result.
- Open the case record. Read the available docket information, including filings, scheduled events, journal entries, judgments or dispositions, where shown.
- Identify the document you actually need. If the online record does not provide a document or if certification is required, use the Clerk’s official copy-request process.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Case Search by Name
A name search is helpful when you do not have the case number. It is also easy to make a mistake—particularly when several people have the same name or a company has been named differently in different filings.
Search an Individual
- Open the official docket search.
- Select Civil Search by Name or Criminal Search by Name, depending on the case.
- Enter the last and first name using the available fields.
- If nothing appears, try a spelling variation or fewer restrictive details.
- Verify the party role, case number, type and filing date against what you know.
Search a Business or Organization
- Start with Civil Search by Name.
- Enter the business name using the portal’s available fields.
- Try the formal legal name before a shortened or trade name.
- If necessary, retry without punctuation or suffixes such as LLC or Inc.
- Check case caption and party role before treating the result as the correct company.
How to Find Cuyahoga County Felony Criminal Cases
The General Division handles adult felony matters. Someone searching an arrest, indictment, criminal charge, sentencing entry or disposition should begin with the Criminal search category when the matter belongs in Common Pleas Court.
- Open the Clerk’s official docket.
- Select Criminal Search by Case if you have the case number, or Criminal Search by Name if you know the defendant name.
- Open the likely result and check the defendant name, case number and filing information.
- Examine the docket entries for proceedings, journal entries and available disposition or sentencing information.
- Do not assume that the original charge reflects the final outcome. Later entries may show amendment, dismissal, plea, verdict, sentencing or further proceedings.
- For an official sentencing entry, judgment or other certified document, contact the Clerk’s records office using the case number.
Arrest vs. Court Case
An arrest record is not necessarily a Common Pleas case. An incident may begin in a municipal court and later become a felony Common Pleas matter.
Charges vs. Conviction
A charge describes an allegation. Look at the final disposition and sentencing entries before describing the result as a conviction.
Sealed or Expunged Cases
Records may not be available through ordinary public online search when subject to a valid sealing or expungement order.

Civil Lawsuits, Foreclosures, Domestic Cases and Appeals
The Cuyahoga Clerk’s public docket offers more than a general person search. Knowing the available categories helps you avoid searching a foreclosure or appeal through the wrong route.
| Search option | Typical purpose | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Civil Search by Case | Locate a civil or supported domestic case when you know its number. | Case caption, parties, docket events and available judgments. |
| Civil Search by Name | Find civil or supported domestic matters involving a person or business. | Party role, filing date, case type and similarly named parties. |
| Foreclosure Search | Search the Clerk’s foreclosure case information. | Case status, judgment entries, orders and any referenced sale proceedings. |
| Submitted E-Filing Complaints | Look up information within the Clerk’s submitted e-filing complaint search. | Submission status and whether the court record reflects a filed case. |
| Court of Appeals by Case/Name | Find Eighth District appellate cases maintained through the Clerk’s system. | Appeal case number, underlying case, appellate docket and decisions. |
How to search a foreclosure case
- Open the official Clerk case search.
- Select the Foreclosure Search option.
- Use the search criteria provided on the court screen.
- Confirm the case number, parties and current docket history.
- Distinguish a foreclosure complaint, judgment and sale-related entry; these do not mean the same thing.
- Verify any scheduled sale or payment issue using the responsible official office rather than an old screenshot or unofficial listing.
Finding Cuyahoga County Divorce and Domestic Relations Records
Divorce, dissolution and related domestic-relations matters are handled through the Domestic Relations Division. The Clerk maintains applicable records, while the Domestic Relations Court also provides a separate public case-name search.
- Visit the official Domestic Relations Case Search by Name.
- Enter the party name or company information requested by the form. The page instructs users to provide at least three letters of a first and last name, or company name.
- Check the search result for a likely case.
- For the fuller case record, follow the court’s direction to use the Cuyahoga County Clerk’s docket system.
- If you need a certified divorce decree or another court document, request it from the Clerk’s records service with the case number and document details.

- Contact Probate Court for records not accessible through the public system.

- Identify whether you need case documents, case history or administrative records.
- Download the indicated request form when appropriate.
- Provide enough case details to identify the record.

The case title identifying the principal parties, such as a plaintiff and defendant or State of Ohio and defendant.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Record Copy Fees and Court Costs
Do not confuse the charge for searching public docket information with copy, certification or filing fees. The Clerk publishes separate policies for records requests and a schedule of court costs.
| Item | Published amount | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary copies — Legal Division | No charge under 33 pages; $0.03 per page if over 33 pages | Per the Clerk’s public records request policy. |
| Certified court copies | $1 per page | Published fee for certification copies, including certificate and seal. |
| Mail delivery | Actual postage and mailing supply costs may apply | Advance payment may be required. |
| Civil complaint filing | $250 | Additional cost rules apply in some circumstances, including numerous defendants. |
| Foreclosure complaint filing | $475 | This is a filing charge, not a records-search charge. |
| Certificate of Judgment — Common Pleas | $25 | Used in the applicable judgment certificate process. |
| Motion to seal/expunge a conviction record | $50 | The Clerk lists this criminal filing fee only for convictions. |
Verify current amounts on the official Clerk filing-fee and court-cost schedule.

No Results Found? Fix the Search Before Assuming There Is No Case

|---|---|---|
| No criminal case | The matter may be a municipal misdemeanor, traffic case, pending transfer or another jurisdiction. | Identify the charging court and search its official docket. |
| Divorce record missing | Wrong search category, name variation or unavailable public information. | Try the official Domestic Relations name search, then Clerk’s Civil/Domestic docket. |
| Estate record missing | Probate uses a separate records system. | Search the Probate Court docket and index. |
| Protection-order case missing | Some information is intentionally unavailable on the internet. | Ask the Clerk about permitted in-person or authorized access. |
| Case appears but document is absent | The online docket may not include every filing or document image. | Request the particular document from the Clerk. |
| Old case not searchable | It may be archived or unavailable in the online index. | Provide the Clerk with names, approximate year and case type. |
| Appeal not found | The appellate case uses a different number or search category. | Select Court of Appeals Search and check the lower-court case details. |

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court: 10 Case Search & Records FAQs
1. How do I search Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court cases online?

2. Can I search Cuyahoga County court cases by a person’s name?
Yes. The Clerk offers civil and criminal name-search options. Select the correct category first, enter the person’s name and compare the results carefully. A matching name alone is not proof that the case involves a particular individual.
3. Does the Cuyahoga Common Pleas docket include felony criminal cases?
Yes. Adult felony criminal cases handled by the Common Pleas General Division can be searched through the Criminal category. Municipal misdemeanors and traffic matters may belong to separate municipal court systems.
4. Where can I find Cuyahoga County divorce records?
Use the official Domestic Relations Court case-name search or the Clerk’s Civil/Domestic case search. For a certified divorce decree or another official copy, contact the Clerk’s case records and certified-copy office.
5. Can I search Cuyahoga County foreclosure cases online?
Yes. The Clerk’s case-search system includes a Foreclosure Search option. Review the case number, parties and current docket entries. A foreclosure filing or judgment does not automatically mean that a property sale has already occurred.
6. How do I get a certified copy of a Cuyahoga Common Pleas court document?
Find the case number and identify the exact document. Then contact the Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts Case Record Requests and Certified Copies office at 1200 Ontario Street, Justice Center, 1st Floor, Cleveland, OH 44113, telephone (216) 443-7977. Confirm the certification charge and available delivery method.

The Clerk’s published public-records policy provides no charge for ordinary Legal Division copies under 33 pages and $0.03 per page for requests over 33 pages. Its court-cost schedule lists certified copies at $1 per page. Other services, postage and filings may carry separate charges.
8. Why are some Cuyahoga protection-order cases missing from the online docket?
The Clerk’s official search page says Domestic Violence case information and General Division Civil Stalking Protection Order case information are not available through internet access. Contact the Clerk for information about permitted access. Sealed, confidential and other restricted records may also be excluded.
9. Are Cuyahoga Probate and Juvenile Court records in the same Common Pleas search?
No. Probate Court has its own docket and index-search system, while Juvenile Court has a separate records-request process with special access restrictions. Choose the division that handles the case rather than assuming the General Division docket searches every Common Pleas record.
10. Is the online Cuyahoga County docket the official court record?
No. The Clerk describes its online case-search service as a convenience that may not include every filed document. When accuracy, current status or certification matters, rely on the official records maintained by the Clerk and request certified copies where required.
